NAPOLEON AND SLAVERY: THE GREAT DEBATE
Since May 23, 2020, eight memory operators have come together to pool their actions in favor of knowledge of the history of trafficking, slavery and their abolition and to promote their tangible and intangible heritage. May 5, 2021 will mark the bicentenary of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte. The latter left a deep mark in the history of France and the world. Its role in the re-establishment of the slave trade and slavery in the French colonies is still too little known.
Three round tables will shed light on the reasons and circumstances that led him to this choice. On the basis of historical research we will answer questions from the public within the framework of three round tables.
This event will take the form of a webinar open to all audiences, with the participation of 18 French and international historians.
2 p.m. Napoleon Bonaparte, the reestablishment of the slave trade and slavery
4:30 p.m. Napoleon Bonaparte, Toussaint Louverture and Santo Domingo (now Haiti)
7 p.m. Slavery and segregation under Napoleon
